That’s what I hoped to reflect in AMoD, and why I use the word “Jewish.” (There’s also the dark, antisemitic history of Jews and vampirism aka “blood libel” that I won’t get into here, but which is also relevant and informed my choices.) But even now, antisemitism is on the rise, and I saw an opportunity to bring its history to the attention of my younger readers. Only they don’t explicitly have to say it, because it’s understood by the majority of readers.Īntisemitism has existed for centuries, as demonstrated by the slaughter of Jews during the 14th century, when they were accused of starting and spreading the Black Death.
But while it may not “make sense” in a fantasy world, I couldn’t help but think of all the fantasy novels that use Christianity as a basis for their religion. AMoD is set in a fantasy world, and I know many Jewish authors choose to make up their own religions modeled on Judaism in their work, which was certainly an option for me. There’s a lot of weight to that word, and it’s one I’m proud to define myself by. This is also my first book with explicit Jewish representation.
